Thyroid Dysfunction Associated with Depressive Disorder: A Descriptive Cross-Sectional Study Done in a Tertiary Care Center of Eastern Nepal

Background: Depression is one of the most common psychiatric disorders with substantial morbidity and mortality. It known to be associated changes in hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid axis, thus may accompanied by subtle thyroid dysfunction. Thus, our study aims determine prevalence characteristics dysfunction newly diagnosed depressive patients. Materials Methods: A prospective descriptive cross sectional was conducted among 130 patient as depression from December 2020 June 2022 after taking ethical approval. The patients symptomatic phase above 18 years recruited study. Thyroid profile consisting free tri-iodothyronine (FT3), thyroxine (FT4) thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) estimated chemiluminescence immunoassay central laboratory Nobel Medical College Teaching Hospital. Results: Out study, 44 had abnormal function test showing a 33.84%. form moderate which 39.99% population. commonest abnormality subclinical hypothyroidism (15.38%) followed overt (14.61%). more severe (46.66%). comparison means fT3, fT4 TSH between different grades statistically significant for fT3 (p=0.048) (p=0.001). Conclusion: abnormalities include hypothyroidism, lower level higher TSH.
